Why Not Turn The Hollywood Sign Into A Tourist Destination?

Villaraigosa and the rest of the Spring Street Gang are clearly unwilling to take the steps needed to create manufacturing jobs here (e.g., by repealing the City's business income tax).

That leaves us, basically, with tourism: people duped into thinking this would be a nice place to visit.

So why not create another attraction for them to visit, a reason for them to stay a little longer and spend a little more? Why not turn the Hollywood sign itself into a tourist destination?

The City could have a monopoly over a "green" shuttle service that would take tourists to the sign. Just put a "hybrid" sticker on those double-decker British buses with the open-air tops. Plus, there could be some walkways for people to wander around the sign and have their pictures taken. The t-shirt sales alone could put a dent in the budget.

But please, contract the operation out based on competitive bidding. Don't turn the concession over to some "non-profit" that will employ "troubled youths" under the guidance of a politically connected Farrakhan-following ex-con or some anti-American "undocumented worker."

Hey, then Councilmember LaBonge can re-direct the mobile food trucks from the Wilshire Miracle Mile up to the hungry, thirsty tourist!
