Twenty-six candidates have each obtained the 500 signatures needed to get their names on the ballot for the March 2011 election in which seven City Council seats are up for grabs.
Six incumbents -- six of the people responsible for the mess that is City Hall -- hope to hang onto their positions of power. They are: Tony Cardenas, Jose Huizar, Herb Wesson, Bernard Parks, Tom LaBonge and Paul Krekorian.
These six City Council members have been part of the Spring Street Gang that brought you the following:
- Obscene waste of your hard-earned tax dollars (e.g., by giving money to Cardenas's brother-in-law to take low-rider cars to Mexico);
- Welfare for the rich (e.g., hundreds of millions of dollars in subsidies per year to billionaire developers) even as they closed libraries;
- Unemployment far above the national, state, and county rates (i.e., 13.7% here vs. 9.6% nation-wide and in Orange County), which translates into over 264,000 of our neighbors desperate to find jobs, while these local career politicians pose for photo-ops and pretend all is well;
- Highest-ever DWP rates, which are used not to fund water and power, but instead cash transfers to the general fund, because City Council does not want to bother getting the voter approval required under the California Constitution for a formal tax hike;
- Highest-ever tax rates and fees, which is just frikkin' ideal, especially during in a recession;
- Brink of bankruptcy, despite the fact that revenues are near all-time highs, an achievement they managed by increasing spending over 30% over the past few years; and
- Dumb-ass resolutions galore on topics having nothing to do with serving you, the taxpayer (e.g., condemning African nations and butting into Latin American murder investigations).
Will L.A.'s voters be oblivious and/or stupid enough to return any of the six incumbents to office? Almost certainly, yes. Why? Because the special interests feeding at the public trough will fund their campaigns.
What can you do about it? Plenty:
First of all, use your email super-powers to tell your friends -- both of them -- to vote AGAINST any incumbent. Most people ignore "local politics," and don't even realize the damage these career politicians are doing. Wake them up. No one else is going to do so.
Second, send whatever you can -- even $20 -- to any candidates you support, regardless of what district they're in. Yours truly has contributed, albeit modestly, because we're on recession lock-down, to David Barron and Rudy Martinez, and will soon contribute to Althea Shaw.
Third, if you're up for it, contact one or more of the campaigns to ask how you can help. It could be something as simple as walking from house to house, leaving flyers on doors. Or maybe just put a yard sign in your yard. Little acts can have big effects. Metaphorically speaking, you can let the air out of the tires of the bad guys' get-away car.
And here's the thing: If you don't lift a finger to help improve our city, then pretty much you have to shut the hell up when the bad guys continue to ruin it. And I know you don't want to shut the hell up.
So DO SOMETHING, would you? You live here. Your job's here. All your stuff is here. Don't just sit by and let the city go further down the drain. Voters have the opportunity to replace nearly HALF the City Council in March. Don't blow this opportunity.
Congrats to Althea, the "Red Barron" aka Snoopy, and Jack N'the Boxx! On the ballot vs. the local trash and pigs running City Hall into the ground!
ReplyDeleteCongrats too for the Encino Residents who won back Encino from Mexico! The Senate hours ago DEFEATED the DREAM Act ("Democrats' Revenge on Encino and Men") Act of 2010 by a 55-43 vote. Pelosi rammed it through the House which gave Encino, CA to Mexico "por un centavo" or whatever the hell that means.
I'd like to take this opportunity to tell the Sentate SCREW YOU! The vote should of been 99-1 against giving my home town away to a foreign state WITHOUT EVEN HEARINGS ON THIS!
Arrogant politicians are all around us, and L.A. City has the chance to boot some out of here. So do it! And be sure to thank Mr. Walter for this place to have a debate about this!
It is going to take hard work and MONEY to get rid of the crooks in power, so roll up your sleeves L.A.
ReplyDeleteThe only way to rid L.A. of the crooks is TURN OFF THE $$$ FAUCET! In Jan, 2011 because the House (and Encino) was yanked from Pelosi (and Mexico) it's going to be much, much harder for L.A.'s political thugs and thieves to get FEDERAL BAILOUT AND PROJECT $$$! This will, in time, mean the thugs won't be able to feed their clientele (the thug unions and crook contractors) thus, they won't be useful anymore and then, and only then be capable of being ejected!
ReplyDeleteAlso, you the public can help too! How?
Spend money OUTSIDE L.A. and then my favorite solution of all: Rent out your current home for top $$$ to a hord of welfare mooches and then YOU MOVE TO ANOTHER CITY, COUNTY, OR STATE and YOU THEN PROFIT FROM THE SAME THUGS WHO USE TO SCREW YOU AND YOUR FAMILY! Thus, L.A. will PAY YOU for a change! HA HA HA!
Example: Home owner, Van Nuys, CA. Age 50. House is nearly paid off (but down 40% in value since 2007) but STILL worth more than paid for some time ago. Houses in OTHER CITIES a great buy NOW!
Solution: Take $$$ OUT from the Van Nuys house, then BUY a home in a nice place, move, then RENT OUT the L.A. City house! Tenents pay your taxes, insurance, upkeep, and NEW MORTAGE payments which are at historic lows!
Screw this God Damn place: Let's get EVEN!
I just received an e-mail from SENATOR (if you please) Boxer proclaiming how proud she is of joining with Senator Feinstein to sat that California will be delighted to take all that money that other states are passing up because California is ready to move forward with the high-speed railroad which will create jobs!
ReplyDeleteNo SENATOR, you could have been proud if you said, give the taxpayers back their money - they do not need a train to nowhere which will never operate at a profit. It is not your "job" SENATOR to artificailly create jobs with my money - tell me where you find it in the Constitution that the Federal government is tasked with that responsibility. A train to nowhere does not "ensure domestic tranquility" nor does it "provide for the common defense", nor does it enable to collection of duties from imports. This project is one of the biggest example of pure pork, which Madame Pelosi promised to prevent.
Please everybody out here, e-mail both of them and let them know this is not what we expect from the Feds.
