Fox 11 Exposes City Hall Boondoggle: You're Paying For Artists' European Vacations

Three cheers for Fox 11 and John Schwada for their serious investigative reporting on L.A. politics!

  1. "Good theatre" may or may not be as good as properly paved streets, but the latter definitely has to be provided first. Get a clue.

  2. A City must provide "core services" before any cultural exports. Obviously, our priorities need to be reaffirmed.

  3. That was a very tame program - one could hardly hear the pings against the "artist" who felt that we taxpayers owed him a living. So why didn't the reporter (John Schwada) challenge any of this drivel - like what about the rest of the working community - are you, Mr. Artist, willing to help their careers , and, if not, why not?

And why does the City need a Cultural Director. Are there metrics used to measure her performance - like challenge her to validate her claims that "cultural" tourists spend more than "regular" tourists when they visit LA! What defines a "cultural" tourist? How does our Cultural Director track the amount of money spent within the City limits of LA by one of these "cultural" tourists - hell we can't even track the money spent by City Council members and staff when they go on a boondoggle and they submit expense reports. Do your "cultural" tourists submit expense reports when they leave town? HOGWASH - Come on John, ask her to show us the facts to support her claim.

Attention Mr. Schwada - how about following up on the low-rider group sent by the City of LA to a book fair in Mexico - see if you can find out what benefit we citizens derived from that expenditure. BTW, I'd have paid fully for a one-way ticket for the low-riders.

Oh, and how about questioning the nepotistic distribution of funds to relatives of City Council members. Maybe one of these payments was not as much as the consulting fees paid recently by the Dodger charity to Jamie McCourt, but when you add them all up, it's a very large sum.

Anyway, thank you John (and KTTV) for a start - now let's continue - this topic should take about a year to cover completely.

  4. Exposure is great and I applaud the media for doing the job that should be done internally. What is the result of the exposure? In most cases, none. The city planners exposed by Channel 2 driving in a city car to lunch in another city are still there collecting pay checks, courtesy of the taxpayer. Also, notice how the Mayor's lackey, Bud Ovrum is trying to take credit for launching his own investigation against bribe taking Building & Safety inspectors. The FBI investigation must go deeper & higher.
